Once again this week did not go quite as planned; it is colder and wetter than I expected, and I began to question how well the pallet coop and the chicks would fare being moved daily on grass, so I made the decision to stick with what I know, and raised them stationary in the back. It’s not ideal, but it will do.
The layout is a 6′ x 12′ rectangle with a 6′ tall arched ceiling, there is a 5-gallon bucket with horizontal chicken nipples and a 48″ trough feeder with a spinning bar, and a 10″ 150w heat lamp. The coop also has an additional “retractable” tarp roof on the front portion of the coop; the best part of this is that it’s an old billboard vinyl, and ironically, for a McDonald’s chicken sandwich 😅. It’s a very simple layout, and it requires to be cleaned daily to maintain a high quality of life for the birds, but it’s worth it to me.
Recap weeks 1-4
At this point it’s going to be pretty repetitive, just feed, clean, and water everyday, and make sure they are growing. So far they have gone through ~35lb’s of feed, with a goal of a 5lb average, and a 2.5lb feed conversion I am looking at ~150lb more of feed over the next 4 weeks, and based on the growth I am seeing at the moment that is looking pretty reasonable.
Over the next 4 weeks I’ll be posting updates including photo’s, feed usage, and any other relevant or funny update. If you have any questions that I’m not answering feel free to reach out.
